Refuse, Recycling & Yard Waste

Refuse: Each resident is supplied with a 65 gallon refuse cart from Groot. Additional refuse that is placed outside the 65 gallon cart requires one (1) overage solid waste sticker for each can or bag.

Recycling: Each single family home up to two units has been provided a 65-gallon cart for recycling collection. Recycling collection occurs weekly on the same day as refuse. The amount of recycling that may be set out per week is unlimited, so please recycle to reduce the volume of refuse going to area landfills. All materials may be mixed together, paper may be placed in paper bags, flatten all corrugated cardboard boxes, remove any non-paper packing material, and rinse all recyclables free of food residue.

Multi-Family Recycling Program: The Village and Groot will continue the aggressive recycling initiative for the multi-family properties in Brookfield. Please note that all the recycling materials may be mixed together in the same cart. The recycling carts will not necessarily be collected the same day as refuse, but will be collected at a minimum, once per week.

Bulk Items: One (1) bulk item is permitted to be placed out for collection per household, per week. Additional bulk items require a solid waste sticker to be placed on the item. This includes: furniture and large household goods, (including, but not limited to ranges, microwaves, refrigerators, dish washers, washing machines, dryers, room air conditioners, freezers, water heaters, home remodeling and repair construction materials (provided such repair/construction material is put in suitable containers or in bundles not exceeding four (4) feet in length and not weighing over sixty (60) pounds per container or bundle). Please call Groot at (708) 485-0900 to arrange for a pick-up.

Carpet must be cut into 4 foot lengths and rolled into rolls no more than 2 feet in diameter. One (1) solid waste sticker is required for each roll.

Oversized and overweight items are any single large or extra heavy item that requires residents to schedule a special pick-up for an additional fee. An example of an oversized item is a piano or any item that requires two people to lift.

Residents must call in advance for White Goods, Oversized/Overweight and Construction Debris.

Yard Waste: Yard waste will be collected during the yard waste season of April 1st - November 30th. Yard waste must be placed in Kraft paper bags or plastic cans (NO PLASTIC BAGS), not to exceed 32 gallons and not weighing more than 50 pounds per container. Yard waste which is too bulky to be placed in a bag or container, such as branches or brush must be securely tied and bundled. Branches may not exceed 3" in diameter. The bundles shall not exceed 2 feet in diameter & 4 feet in length nor weigh more than 50 pounds. Collection is the same day as the refuse and recycling collection.

Grass clippings, leaves, twigs, garden debris, weeds, fruits, seeds, stalks, vines are acceptable landscape items. Landscape does not include wood timbers, plastic edging, plant pots or trays, fertilizer or landscape material bags, landscape fabric, bark, wood chips, root sections, sand, gravel, sod, firewood, rocks, excess amounts of dirt or animal waste.

Fall Leaf Collection: The Public Works Department will continue to collect fall leaves rakes to the parkway.

Christmas Trees: The first two (2) weeks in January, Groot will pick-up your Christmas tree free of charge. Please remove all ornaments, lights tinsel and garland prior to placing your tree at the curb for pick-up on your regularly scheduled collection day. Trees set out with lights and ornaments still on will be disposed of as refuse.

Electronic Waste Collection - "e-waste":

The Illinois Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act prohibits any person from allowing or to cause mixing of any of the items listed with municipal waste that is intended for disposal at a landfill.

Groot Industries offers collection of these items directly from your home for an additional fee; however, you must call in advance to schedule a pick-up and make arrangements.

All items collected will be recycled and rendered inoperable. Due to the sensitive nature of some electronic items (computer hard drives or storage devices), we prefer to pick up items from the front, side, or top of drive locations.

Customers also have the option to bring their items directly to drop-off sites throughout the area, most of which are for no charge. Please visit the where and how page of our site and click on your county and then your town to search for area drop–off locations.
