Residents of Arlington Heights may place an unlimited amount of household trash out for twice-weekly collection. No cans, only bags or a Groot rented refuse cart are allowed at the curb. We try to be regular with our collection times but we may arrive earlier or later on your collection day, please have your material out by 6:00 AM to be assured pick up.
Refuse Cart Rental
Residents have the option to rent a 65-gallon or 95-gallon refuse cart for a monthly fee. Please call Groot to have this setup.
Electronic Waste Collection - "e-waste":
The Illinois Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act prohibits any person from allowing or to cause mixing of any of the items listed with municipal waste that is intended for disposal at a landfill.
Groot Industries offers collection of these items directly from your home for an additional fee; however, you must call in advance to schedule a pick-up and make arrangements.
All items collected will be recycled and rendered inoperable. Due to the sensitive nature of some electronic items (computer hard drives or storage devices), we prefer to pick up items from the front, side, or top of drive locations.
Customers also have the option to bring their items directly to drop-off sites throughout the area, most of which are for no charge. Please visit the where and how page of our site and click on your county and then your town to search for area drop–off locations.
Fluorescent bulbs, needles, paint tires etc...create special problems, please click here for help.
Bulk items such as a couch or dresser or up to 1 cubic yard (3' x 3' x 3') of miscellaneous debris or construction material will be collected each week at no additional charge. Construction type debris should be stacked or bundled in lengths no longer than 4 feet and no larger than 2 feet in diameter.
- Carpeting should be in rolls no longer than 4 feet long and two feet in diameter and taped.
- In general try and keep any loose material bundled and neat so we can pick up.
- Stone, concrete, and dirt can only be picked up in containers and cannot weigh more than 45lbs. per container.
Special pick-ups and extra garbage:
If you find you need extra rubbish picked up on a day other than your normal service day or you have more than 1 cubic yard of construction type debris there will be an extra charge.
Some items are just too big or heavy for our people to handle without special equipment, in that case your driver may have to leave it so special arrangements can be made. In this event special charges will apply. Please call and check first if you think what you have placed out falls in this category.
Recycling Cart Program:
Unlimited recycling service is provided. Each household will receive (1) 65-gallon cart unless a smaller or larger cart is ordered by calling Groot. All recyclables may be mixed together in the cart provided to you, no sorting is needed. Do not put recyclables in plastic bags.

Yard Waste Program: State law requires us to pick up yard waste separately from general waste. Our program begins on April 1st and ends November 29th. The Village of Arlington Heights offers two types of programs as follows:
Residents may choose to sign up for a YARD WASTE SUBSCRIPTION at an annual rate. Subscribers are permitted to place at the curb a total of three landscape waste bags or bundles, per week, without stickers, on each landscape waste collection day between April 1st and October 14th. Subscribers are permitted to place at the curb a total of ten landscape waste bags or bundles, without stickers, on each landscape waste collection day between October 15th and November 29th. Residents who wish to sign up should contact our customer service department. Residents will be invoiced in March of each year automatically unless they call to cancel. Subscriptions must be paid for prior to the beginning of each season.
Residents may also choose the standard bag and tag program for yard waste instead of using the subscription. Residents must place one sticker on each bag or bundle placed out for collection. The sticker must be placed on the bag so as to be readily visible from the street. Groot will not collect the bags unless a sticker is attached. Please see below for a list of sticker retailers, or you may purchase online.
Regardless of which option you choose all yard waste must be prepared in the same way. Leaves and grass clippings must be placed in two-ply, 30 gallon, Kraft type paper bags and bags must not weigh more than 50 pounds each. Yard waste in plastic bags will NOT be collected. Plastic tape and silver duct tape must not be used to close the bag because it will not decompose in the compost. Brush and small limbs must be tied into bundles with twine or string and may not exceed 4 ft in length, 2 ft. in diameter, or 50 pounds. Each bundle must have a sticker on them if using the bag and tag method. Logs greater than 6 inches do not require a sticker and should be disposed of with garbage; there is a 1 cubic yard limit.
Christmas trees will be collected on your regular collection day from Dec. 31 through Jan. 13. Stickers are not necessary for Christmas trees.
State law requires us to collect any white good type of appliance such as refrigerators, ovens; washers etc. separately and recycle them. Appliances are picked up on Mondays at no charge to residents. Please call Groot 24 hours in advance to schedule a pick up.<
Residents are required to notify Groot prior to going on vacation. There is a 30 day minimum and no maximum (within one calendar year) in order to receive a credit. Residents must supply a start and return date prior to their departure. Any balance must be paid in full before vacation status is applied. Credit will be applied upon return. No credit will be issued if Groot is notified after the fact.
Senior discounts for people 65 years of age or older are available; residents must apply in person (if able) at the Park Place Senior Center and bring a copy of your tax bill. Other discounts may be available for head of household persons with disabilities and whose income is less than $16000 per year. Please contact the Villages Human Services Coordinator at (847) 368-5791 for more information and an application.
