Electronics No Longer Collected as Municipal Waste
10/31/11

On August 10, 2011, Governor Pat Quinn signed legislation (Senate Bill 2106) into law that impacts the recycling of electronic waste, or e-waste. In an effort to communicate proactively with our customers, we would like to make you aware of how this legislation will affect you.

This legislation has created a ban on the mixing of e-waste with municipal waste intended for disposal at area landfills. This ban took effect on January 1, 2012. Please find below a list of electronics that will no longer be accepted as municipal waste:

-Computer
-Electronic Mouse
-Computer Monitor
-Small-scale Server
-Electronic Keyboard
-Scanner
-Television
-Printer
-Facsimile Machine
-Digital Converter Box
-Videocassette recorder
-Cable Receiver
-Portable Digital Music Player
-Satellite Receiver
-Digital Video Disc Recorder
-Video Console

Groot Industries offers collection of these items directly from your home for an additional fee; however, you must call in advance to schedule a pick-up and make arrangements.

All items collected will be recycled and rendered inoperable. Due to the sensitive nature of some electronic items (computer hard drives or storage devices), we prefer to pick up items from the front, side, or top of drive locations.

Customers also have the option to bring their items directly to drop-off sites throughout the area, most of which are for no charge. Please visit the where and how page of our site and click on your county and then your town to search for area drop–off locations.
