COMPLIANCE CHECKLIST FOR CITY OF CHICAGO RECYCLING ORDINANCE
The following checklist will help you determine whether or not you have met all the requirements of the Chicago High Density Residential and Commercial Source Reduction and Recycling Ordinance. Each of the following requirements must be met in order to be in compliance with the Ordinance.
- A source separation recycling program that provides for the collection of at least three approved recyclable materials or two approved recyclable materials and two approved source reduction measures. You must have an approved source separation waiver from the Department of Environment to use post-collection separation.
- A recycling plan must be written and kept on the premises for inspection by the Department of Environment. This plan must, at a minimum, include:
- A list of the recyclable materials included in the building's recycling program;
- A description of the source reduction methods utilized (if applicable);
- A description of the program and identifies the type of collection method used;
- The written quality reports from your recycling service provider; and
- A summary of the building's education.
- An education program that, at a minimum:
- Distributes flyers to all tenants and employees that describes the building's recycling program and explains how to participate.
- Provides annual notice to all tenants on the status of the recycling program;
- Provides tenants written notice within ten days of any change in the program; and
- Posts signs in common areas identifying the materials to be recycled and (if applicable) the location of the material collection points.
Materials to help you meet these requirements (i.e., general information about recycling methods, sample recycling plan, education ideas, tips for negotiating with service providers, etc.) can be provided to you by the Department of the Environment. |
